Since the Holy Spirit was unleashed on the world, there have been many debates and speculation about end times and prophecy. No doubt the war between Russia and the Ukraine has scholars and prophets scrambling to see how this may fit in with the Book of Revelation. I myself have seen videos by prophetic believers telling me to “look for Israel” in these events. I shook my head, “Israel, where would Israel be in this scenario?” The answer is kind of surprising as the events unfolded, I learned that the president of Ukraine is of Jewish descent, and with that knowledge I started to think, not to lean on my own understanding but to truly look at what is going on and meditate on what this could possibly mean.
While I do not have any degree in theology, I do consider myself a student of the Word and this has gotten me thinking about covenant and what that may mean today. Certainly, any practicing Jew would understand covenant but not all modern Christians et al might truly know or understand covenant in a biblical way. Abrahamic Covenant, Davidic covenant, Mosaic Covenant and New Covenant. What is a covenant and how does this relate to the situation in the Ukraine?
At its simplest a covenant is a promise or pact between two people. Think of it like being blood brothers or pinky swearing. When you enter into covenant it is serious. (Another great example of covenant is David and Jonathan 1 Samuel Chapters 18-20 and 2 Samuel 21:8-10.) When Abram and God made covenant with one another (Genesis 17:4-11) God promised not only to prosper Abraham but also these blessings were to extend to all of Abraham’s descendants throughout the generations. What a promise! Not only would God make Abraham fruitful and multiply him exceedingly but he would prosper any that would come after in Abraham’s line in an everlasting covenant just because he promised it.
Enough rambling, what do you think this has to do with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky? Well, if President Zelensky is a Jew, practicing or not (which I don’t know if he is or isn’t) the promises made to Abraham through his covenant with God extend to him as a descendant. It seems miraculous that the Ukraine has been able to stand up to mighty Russia for this amount of time. It seems miraculous that the world has come together to provide arms and support in their time of need and it also seems miraculous that while there are many wars that rage in the world this is the one with the most attention on it. It does seem as though there is a spiritual power working supernaturally to protect and provide for the citizens of Ukraine.
I read an article in the New Yorker titled “Volodymyr Zelensky Leads the Defense of Ukraine with His Voice.” And why not? David defeated Goliath with a couple of stones and a slingshot, Jehoshaphat’s enemies by singing and praising simply dropped dead (2 Chronicles 20:1-25) and Moses split the sea with a stick and the Children of Israel’s enemies were drowned chasing after them. So certainly, if God has gifted Zelensky with a voice then let him use it to subdue his enemies. The blessing of Abraham is on him and that makes God’s mighty power available to him and his people.
The bible instructs in many places for us to pray for peace in Jerusalem. I suspect by praying for Ukraine many people around the world are unknowingly doing just that. As we stand with Ukraine and pray were all are really inviting God to intervene in the conflict. I can’t wait to see how He shows himself strong.
The good news for the rest of us is that through the sacrifice of Jesus this power is also made available to the gentiles. We have been adopted into Gods family (Ephesians1:5) and are joint heirs in Christ (Romans 8:16-17.)
The purpose of my blog is not only to get out my thoughts, but to also get others thinking. Too often as Christians we let out Pastors, Priest and Evangelists do all the thinking for us instead of letting the Holy Spirit guide us as we meditate on God’s promises. What do you think about covenant? Does God’s covenant apply to today’s generation and even do you think God is still in the miracle business? What gifts do you have that God can use to defend and prosper you?
